Jimmy Bak

Contemporary Nordic Abstract Artist

My contemporary fine art practice explores the interplay of light and color, rooted in a lifelong scientific foundation in physics, chemistry, and spectroscopy. A formative expedition to the historic ochre quarries of Roussillon, Provence, revealed a natural chromatic harmony that perfectly mirrored the spectral relationships I had long studied in the laboratory. I discovered a striking parallel to these intense southern pigment formations within the coastal cliffs of Denmark, particularly along the eastern coastlines of Zealand.

This profound connection forms the thesis of my abstract paintings. My work acts as a visual dialogue where the raw, warm intensity of Mediterranean earth pigments meets the subdued, atmospheric tones and diffused, cool light of the Danish landscape. Through minimalist abstraction, these contrasting environments balance restraint with emotional warmth.

This inquiry culminates in my ongoing Horizon Project—a structured project of disciplined, fixed-format mixed-media works. Executed using acrylic, structural charcoal, and archival crayons on masonite panels, these geometric abstractions investigate the precise boundary where atmospheric light meets geological matter, translating the horizon line into a study of spectral transitions.

Alongside my landscape-driven works, I create intuitive abstract paintings incorporating recurring motifs like masks and animal forms, allowing for a primitive exploration of shape and color theory. Ultimately, painting serves as a direct extension of my scientific inquiry—an alternative methodology for investigating the mysteries of light, matter, and human perception.
